Infants & Toddlers Parenting

The way you feed your newborn is ultimately the first nutrition decision you will make for your baby. The guidelines on breastfeeding and bottle feeding will help you make the correct decision that’s right for you and your child. Most doctors say breastfeeding is the best for newborn babies. American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) say that babies should be breastfed for about 6 months. After the introduction of solid foods to the newborn ,breastfeeding should very well continue throughout the first year and typically beyond.

Sometimes breastfeeding may not be possible or preferable for all new moms. Making the decision to breastfeed or bottle feed a newborn is based on the mother’s comfort level with breastfeeding and her lifestyle. In very few cases, breastfeeding may not be suited for a mom and her baby. If you question your decision about whether to breastfeed or formula feed, please feel free to talk to your doctor. Breastfeeding  has many advantages, most important, breast milk is perfect for the human digestive system. It contains the essential nutrients that a newborn needs, — lactose , protein, and fat — are very easily digested by your newborn . Store bought formulas try to imitate breast milk, and come very close, but can’t equal the exact composition. Store bought and prepared baby formula is a nutritious alternative to moms breast milk. Bottle feeding offers more flexibility for new moms, and it makes it easy to know how much your baby is getting.

Babies digest infant formula a lot slower than breast milk, a formula fed baby may need fewer feedings than one who is fed breast milk . Infant formula feeding can also make it easier to feed the baby in public places, and also allows the father and all other family members to help feed the newborn, which can enhance the bonding process. Breastfeeding has unique demands, and so does bottle feeding your newborn. Bottle feeding requires a good deal of organizational skills and preparation,  Also, Infant formula can be very expensive. Jotting down when your baby cries for food ,can get you and your babies daily routines much easier to cope with.

It’s very important to have enough formula on hand, and clean bottles ready to be used.

Some key guidelines for Infant formula feeding:

  • Be sure to follow directions on the can when preparing formula.
  • Bottles of prepared formula kept out of the refrigerator longer than 1hr should be discarded.
  • Prepared bottles of formula must be stored in the refrigerator and for no longer than 24 hours, they can be gently warmed just before feeding your newborn.
  • You can warm a bottle of prepared Infant formula by holding it in a running stream warm water or putting it in a pot of warm water. A microwave should never be used to warm a babies formula ,the bottle can heat unevenly and can badly burn a baby’s mouth.

In summary just trust your mother’s intuition, it can be a stressful time so share it with family and friends .
